Life is a certain amount of energy. It is said that in our DNA is the same material that forms the stars.
The year I lost my father was the same year I started to dance. My energy for life was revived. That was also the time when I met Fran who had been dancing since childhood. He had this incredible talent/gift which was far bolder than mine.
I had very high hopes for him. I was excited to see him succeed. He was far better than some of the instructors, but he was one of the few who complimented rather than criticize me while on the floor. Fran was too fragile to fight his bullies. I wish I was around long enough to tell him to hold an invisible mirror to make the bullies see that the joke was on them.
Life is a certain amount of energy. For Fran, dancing was probably his only source. The bullying got in his head and he fell into severe depression. He was in a very dark place when he lost his chance to do what he loved the most. It was also his only way to earn a living. Without it, the spark in him was gone. It is haunting to see a picture of him with unkempt long hair, he even grew a moustache. He clearly was unable to take care of himself anymore. He was not himself; his eyes were empty. His physical body was alive, but there was no positive energy left in it. So eventually, his body gave up. Like a ship without its captain, it couldn’t survive being lost at sea for far too long.
I wish there were no bullies. But bullies, if you think of it, are also victims of some other form of abuse. Insecurities are loud, you know. There are some who can’t overcome their insecurities that they end up just like their abusers. Not having a good grasp of emotions is what happens in adults who grew old but didn’t grow up. They’re the narcissists, the bullies, trolls, some members of the military and the police, the president of the Philippines, some senators and congressmen.
This is a call for people to be kinder, to work on whatever insecurities we have so we don’t end up projecting it on other people. So that the unnecessary, unfortunate case like Fran’s could have been avoided. Dance among the stars now, Fran. We said goodbye to 2020 and sadly that includes saying farewell to you.
Life is energy. You were a star. You are.
