Solo Travels and Fake Wedding Rings
It may not have crossed your mind but some women choose to wear a fake ring when they travel.
Why?
Two reasons.
1. To protect “real and expensive” wedding or engagement rings from getting stolen.
2. To push men away.
As simple as that. Two valid reasons, right?
I asked fellow female travellers about their TOP THREE COUNTRIES where they had to wear a fake ring to get rid of unwanted attention from men and I received tons of comments.
Unfortunately, respondents can’t limit it to THREE. So in no particular order, the countries mentioned were:
1. United States — haha
2. Egypt
3. All through Western Africa (Male, Mauritius, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea)
4. Turkey
5. Lebanon
6. United Arab Emirates
7. Saudi Arabia
8. Morocco
9. India
Getting touched inappropriately, getting stalked or cat called, being asked for personal information, getting asked out to go to a bar to dance. These can happen in an instant and be done by random strangers in public spaces like streets, train stations, etc.
Wearing a fake ring won’t matter but it can help when you’re in smaller spaces such as hostel and hotel lobbies, pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. If the guy can carry a good conversation, I really don’t mind staying a bit longer. Who doesn’t want good company? But if the conversation isn’t making sense, it’s best to go on actress mode and excuse yourself.
These are just some of the many experiences a solo female traveller would have to endure and this can happen anywhere in the world and most especially in the countries mentioned above.
It’s during my travel around the world that I have met great male friends but just like the women who participated in my survey, I have had my share of stories. I haven’t worn any fake wedding ring in my travels. I have very little interest in jewelries. My only option to avoid unfortunate situations is to be quick to go away and/or run.
So, to you dear fellow solo female traveler, be aware and beware but don’t be discouraged. We have but one short life. Take a dare and see the world.
Take a step and wear a fake engagement ring with a fake diamond that adds a bit more bite to any punches that might need throwing. =)
